Vernala provides grant-management and land-stewardship software to conservation nonprofits. This policy explains what information we collect from you and the people you serve, how we use it, and the choices you have.
Vernala is operated by Vernala, Inc. ("Vernala," "we," "our," or "us"). We build software exclusively for conservation nonprofits — land trusts, watershed groups, wildlife habitat organizations, farmland trusts, trail conservancies, and coastal or river conservation groups.
This policy applies to vernala.co, the Vernala web application, our mobile monitoring form, and any related services (together, the "Service"). It does not apply to the internal privacy practices of the customer organizations that use Vernala.
We collect information you provide directly, information generated as you use the Service, and a small amount of information from third-party integrations you enable.
We use information to operate the Service, keep it secure, bill you, and help you get more done. Specifically:
We do not sell your data, and we do not use conservation records or landowner contact information to train third-party AI models.
We share information only in these narrow cases:
Vernala sets a small number of cookies, and every one of them is necessary to run the Service. We do not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or third-party analytics — so there is nothing to consent to, and no consent banner to dismiss.
We watch for application errors through a third-party monitoring service configured to capture errors only — no session recording, no page-by-page tracking, and no cookies of its own. Error reports are stripped of personal information before they are sent. Payments are handled on our payment processor's own hosted checkout page; any cookies it sets are set there, on its domain, and are governed by its privacy policy.
Offline field use. The monitoring tools are built to work with no signal, which means your device keeps a working copy of what you need in the field: your property list and boundaries, map tiles you have downloaded, and any monitoring visit still in progress, including photos waiting to upload. This is stored by the browser on your own device rather than sent to us, and it stays there until the visit uploads. Signing out does not remove it — to clear it, delete this site's data in your browser settings or remove Vernala from your home screen. Anything in an unfinished visit is deleted along with it, so upload your work before you clear.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking the ones above will stop you signing in, because they are what keep you signed in.
You can review, update, export, or delete most information directly inside Vernala. Admins can remove team members at any time from Settings › Team.
Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights — including the right to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you, and to object to certain processing. To exercise these rights, or if you are a landowner whose contact information appears in a Vernala account, email hello@vernala.co and we will respond within 30 days.
Customer records remain in Vernala for as long as your organization has an active subscription. When a subscription ends, records enter read-only archive for 90 days, then are permanently deleted unless a longer retention is required by law or the customer requests earlier deletion.
Backup copies may persist for up to 35 additional days before rotating out of our backup system.
We use industry-standard technical and organizational safeguards described in more detail on our Security page. No system is perfectly secure — please tell us right away if you suspect an issue with your account.
Vernala is operated from the United States. If you access the Service from outside the U.S., you understand that your information will be processed here. Where required, we rely on standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards for international transfers.
Vernala is not directed to children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has provided information, please contact us and we will delete it.
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the "Last updated" date and, for material changes, notify account admins by email before the change takes effect.
